Everyone in job search wants to make the very best professional impression when submitting a resume. So if you are responding to job announcements, I’m sure that you are customizing the resume for each position and embedding matching keywords. And then it comes time to save the document ( be sure to give each submitted resume a different identity).
Should you save and send your resume as a PDF or a Word Document? It’s understandable that a PDF might seem like the more professional and secure format since no changes can be made to the content. But, it is not the preferred format today and this is why.
More and more companies are using Applicant Tracking Systems. It’s estimated that about 60% of companies now have these programs. They are an efficient system (although not error free) because they allow organizations to streamline the resume selection process. The company can program the system to send an automated response upon receipt of each resume and they can search the received resumes by specific key words that they have programmed into the system. That’s why job seekers are hearing career professionals emphasize the importance of key words and resume customization.
And that’s why you must send your resume in a Word document. Automated Tracking Systems do not read PDF documents. You could be the most qualified person for that position with a stellar resume, but it will not be seen if submitted as a PDF. The company cannot search for you by name or key words because the system has not recognized you. So stay on the safe side and send your resume in a Word format.
